A Discussion of the Connections between History and Today
About David Hildebrand
David Hildebrand has taught in Baltimore City Public Schools since 2003.
Prior to that, he held various executive merchandising, marketing, and operational jobs with Sears, Roebuck & Co.
For the first ten years, Mr. Hildebrand taught at Western High School, the oldest all girls public high school in the United States.
For two years, he held a variety of instructional positions at Heritage High School (Teacher, Instructional Leadership Team, 10th Grade Team Lead, Tech Lead, Grade Reporter, Scheduler, and AVID Coordinator). For the 2016-2017 school year, he is teaching history at Carver Vocational-Technical High School.
During his teaching career, he has taught World History, American Government, US History, Economics, Sociology, AP US History, and AP Government and Politics. Additionally he has participated extensivly in summer professional development, including the Teaching American History Seminar, AP Summer Institute, Gilder Lehrman Seminar, and the Bryn Mawr Insitute in US History. Also, he has thrice been an AP US History Reader with the College Board.
Mr. Hildebrand earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Wheaton College in 1988. More recently, he completed the Master of Arts in Teaching at the Johns Hopkins University in 2004. He currently holds an Advanced Professional Teaching Certificate from MSDE.
Mr. Hildebrand has maintained a social studies webportal since 2003. In order to make this happen, he taught himself HTML, Coldfusion, SQL, and a variety of other machine languages. Prior to this version, the name of his website was BaltimoreTeacher.com.
The site—BaltimoreTeacher.com—started in 2003 while Mr. Hildebrand was interning at Dunbar High School.
At the time, phones were "dumb" as far as the internet, and very few students had them anyway.
The goal of the site was to provide static links to other places on the web, and to teaching documents normally printed and distributed in class.
As technology has grown, the site has aimed to bring together dynamic content served to users based on the actual learning setting— to provide interactive content for teacher and student.
In 2012, the site was rebranded and extensively re-designed using a bootstrap framework that would optimize the viewpoints for phone, tablet or desktop.
